What to Pack for a Thailand Yoga Retreat
On top of what you’d expect to pack for a 1-2 week overseas trip to Southeast Asia, (passport, toiletries, camera, travel medical insurance, etc.), there are some additional items you may want to consider bringing with you to a yoga retreat in Thailand.
Bags
First things first. Suitcase or backpack?
If your retreat lasts more than a week, you have door-to-door transport arranged to/from your airport, and aren’t planning to do any additional traveling on either end, then a small carry-on suitcase will probably serve you best.
But if you’re planning to travel a bit, are making your way to the retreat on your own, or your retreat is on the shorter end (less than a week), a medium-sized backpack might be a better bet.
Clothing
Heading to the beach? Pack for warm, humid temps at all hours. And don’t forget your swimsuit!
It can occasionally get breezy in the evening, especially if you’re on the beach, so a light cover-up or long-sleeve shirt might be worth packing.
Heading to the mountains of Northern Thailand? The weather will still be warm during the day, but it can cool off considerably in the evening, but you shouldn’t need more than a light fleece, jacket, or shawl.
You’ll also want to pack a light rain jacket if you plan on visiting in the rainy season (June through October in Northern Thailand and October through December in the Gulf Islands).
Regarding yoga clothes, our recommendation is not to switch things up and buy a bunch of new stuff to take with you. You’re best off packing the tried-and-true workout clothes you wear in your normal practice at home.
Also, many retreat centers have laundry facilities, so you might not have to bring two weeks worth of yoga gear for a 14-day retreat. Be sure to check with the center ahead of time just to make sure.
Footwear
You won’t need to worry about footwear during your yoga classes. But if other activities are on the docket such as hiking, walking around town, excursions, etc., it pays to pack the right shoes for the job.
For the beach and short strolls around town, flip-flops are usually all you need. If you plan to do day trips or hiking, pack a super comfy pair of shoes or all-weather hiking sandals.
Yoga Props
Top yoga retreats in Thailand generally provide any necessary yoga props such as mats, blocks, straps, and so on. But of course its always good to check with the retreat center ahead of time to be sure.
Other Recommended Items
We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle, particularly in Thailand where single-use plastics too often end up in the ocean.
If you plan on being out and about, sunscreen is vital. Reef-friendly, biodegradable sunscreen is always a good idea in the ocean to protect the fragile eco-system.
Finally, if you’re coming from outside of the region, you’ll likely need to bring a travel adapter with you. And be mindful of the voltage range of your devices, as Thailand uses 220v @50Hz.
