What to Pack for a Mexico Yoga Retreat

In addition to what you might normally pack for an overseas getaway of 1-2 weeks (passport, toiletries, camera, travel medical insurance, etc.), there are special considerations you will want to take into account for a yoga retreat in Mexico.

What you pack for your Mexico yoga retreat will largely depend on the length of your retreat and the activities you plan to do (in addition to your yoga practice).

Either way, you’ll want to pack light! After all, you’re laying down a decent chunk of cash for a wellness getaway. Don’t bog yourself down with a bunch of unnecessary clutter in your suitcase or backpack.

Bags

Speaking of suitcase or backpack, which should you bring?

If you’ve signed up for a retreat lasting more than a week, have door-to-door transport arranged to/from your airport and the retreat center, and don’t plan to do any additional traveling on either end, then a small carry-on suitcase will probably be your best bet.

However, if you do plan to travel a bit, don’t have door-to-door transport arranged, or are headed to a 5-day retreat, a medium-sized backpack should serve you well.

Clothing

You’ll want to pack with the knowledge that, with the exception of the Rosarito retreat, all of the Mexico yoga retreats on our list are located squarely in the tropics.

That means that between March and November, except days to be warm (or downright hot), and evenings to be comfortable shorts weather.

December to February can get a bit chilly in the evenings and mornings, but you shouldn’t need more than a light fleece, jacket, or shawl.

You’ll also want to pack a light rain jacket if you plan on visiting in the rainy season (June through October in most of the destinations on this list).

In terms of yoga attire, if you’re committing to a weeklong (or more) yoga retreat, you’ve probably found what works for you in your normal practice. No need to go out and get special yoga clothes for your retreat.

With that said, be mindful of the styles of yoga you’ll be practicing during your retreat and pack accordingly.

Also, most retreat centers have a laundry facility, so if you shouldn’t have to bring 14 days worth of yoga clothes for a 14-day retreat. Regardless, it’s good to check ahead of time with the center to make sure.

If you plan to swim (all of our top Mexico yoga retreat are located in stunning beach destinations we we hope you do!) bring a comfortable swimsuit, pack towel, and cover-up (for the ladies).

Lastly, please keep in mind that Mexican culture is fairly conservative, particularly with regards to dress. Be mindful of where you plan to visit and which activities outside of the center you plan to do.

While a two-piece bikini might be common in popular beach destinations like Tulum and Puerto Vallarta, you’ll want to cover up if you plan to venture into town or visit ruins or other cultural sites.

Footwear

Obviously, you won’t need to worry much about footwear while you’re practicing yoga. But if you plan on doing other activities such as hiking, walking around town, or beach bumming, be sure to pack the right shoes for the job.

For the beach and short strolls around town, flip-flops or beach sandals are all you need in most beach destinations in Mexico.

If you plan to do day-long excursions or hiking, pack a super comfy pair of all-weather hiking sandals.

Yoga Props

Top yoga retreats in Mexico generally provide whatever yoga props you’ll need, such as yoga mats, blocks, straps, and so on.

But of course its always good policy to check with your retreat center beforehand just to be sure.

It’s always a good idea to bring along a reusable water bottle, particularly in Mexico where single-use plastics are rarely recycled and too often end up in the ocean.

Sunscreen is a must, particularly if you plan on getting out and about, hopping on a couple of excursions, or are doing a Surf & Yoga retreat.

Reef-friendly, biodegradable sunscreen is always a good idea in the ocean. However, lotions of any kind are discouraged or flat-out banned at most Yucatan Peninsula cenotes.

We recommend a high-UPF rash guard for cenotes and long days in the ocean.

Finally, if you’re coming from the U.S. or Canada, no need to worry about bringing a power adapter. All your charging devices should work just fine in Mexico.

If you’re coming from elsewhere in the world (particularly Europe, Asia, or Africa) you’ll likely need to bring a travel adapter with you. And be mindful of the voltage range of your devices as Mexico uses 127v @60Hz.
