Staff was wonderful. Extremely accommodating. They were able to meet us at the airport and the pier and lead us to the hotel. Which I recommend as the old town area of Lamu is a bit of a maze. The building has super authentic architecture and lots of outdoor areas to relax.
Located in Lamu and with 18th Century Swahili House Museum reachable within a 1-minute walk, LAMU HOUSE has concierge services, non-smoking rooms, a restaurant, free WiFi and a bar.

The hotel was great, hanging out by the pool was wonderful. Reminded me of the Road hotels in Morocco with the pool in the centre open with plants around.
The meals were all very tasty and portion sizes just right. The view from our balcony was informative and immersive to watch. Our room was kept spotless and netting around bed much appreciated, that being said we had only one mosquito bite between the two of us. Many people came by on the tour to take photos of the pool, I think the hotel was part of the tour of Old Town.
Shout out to Esther at the front desk, always friendly and took care of any needs we had.
Wifi was excellent.

Jamala Guesthouse, nestled in the heart of Lamu Old Town, was an absolute delight for us first-time visitors to Lamu. It provided a unique opportunity to deeply immerse ourselves in the local culture and connect with the welcoming people. The early morning calls to prayer from the surrounding mosques, for instance, became an integral part of the immersive experience.
It is located just a short walk from the boat jetty which is super convenient! The host, Baji, was not only highly responsive but also incredibly helpful. Right from the moment we made our booking, he was readily available to provide us with all the information we needed. Baji even arranged a boat pick-up for us and an enriching Old Town Tour with Abu, who was an absolute delight to be around.
The rooms at Jamala were both spacious and well-equipped with all the essentials, making it excellent value for money. The breakfast was also nice and balanced, with the option of tea/coffee, bread, eggs and fruit. There is also a kitchen available complete with a fridge that is available for guests to use.
We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay at Jamala again! Thank you to the team for making our inaugural visit to Lamu very memorable!😊😊

The staff and manager of the house so helpful. Lots of advice and recommendations where to eat.
Also easy to find in the maze of Lamu, close to the jetty but far enough for a peaceful stay
Lamu is a mesmerizing town with a beautiful history.
Lamu is a mesmerizing town with a beautiful history. The people are very friendly and welcoming. For instance - the town can be like a labyrinth, which makes it a bit challenging sometimes to find spots - even with Google Maps. Either people ask you if you need help or you can ask them and they show you the way - many of them even walked us to the location. This experience was so wonderful - I would definitely come back again.

Great, quaint town.
Great, quaint town. The scent of the donkey excrement is off-putting but seeing them is sublime. Being a coastal town, there are many ‘captains’. I had my transport pre-organized with my accommodation so be weary of that and potential scams, as well as the impromptu tour guides. Touch water, take a sunset sail boat ride, and visit the beach, maybe even Shela. Locals were very nice and friendly, warm welcomes. Affordable restaurants as well, Sailor’s Joint for example. I stayed at Subira House.

A beautiful resort, with many amenities with a lot of details paid to the decor. Unfortunately, not the same attention was given to the 3 restaurants. Poor quality food with a limited selection except for a very nice breakfast buffet. Had confirmed a twin bedded room, but did not receive one. The beds are extremely firm as the mattress sits on a cement platform but does have a nicely hung mosquito net.
Easy access across the water to Lamu.

- The ocean activities are marvelous!
- The ocean activities are marvelous! Amazing experience, memories I will always treasure. Food was also nice, a lot of seafood. Very culturally rich too!
- The town is dirty, because of monkeys, people in Lamu seem to have gotten used to it, but for an outsider its not. In addition, they don't treat the donkeys right, so it's sad to see them suffering. Lamu is a small town, I wish they would think of other means of transport and at least for people just walking, donkeys should be forbidden. There was also a lot of trash on the street, even in monuments.

Lamu is quite a unique place which is different from the main land of Kenya. You can enjoy the historical environment, beautiful beaches, sun rise and sun set, relaxing on the boat/dhow. And Lamu people are very kind to visitors, I love it. Some activities in the sea may be affected by the tide. So, it's better to ask people in advance when you can do the activity you want to do.

The town is quirky and locals are great.
The town is quirky and locals are great. No cars or motorbikes in the center but lot of donkeys. Lamu is really worth to visit! Only thing, its quite dirty, especially the seafront. Plastic every where
Mohammed is a very great host. He welcomed me so nicely and offered a guide to show me around Lamu. We also made a food arrangement and him and his family cooked for me for the whole of my stay there which was affordable as food can be quite tricky when new. You will feel at home. I loved the upstairs rooms because of the ventilation, so would highly recommend those. It's also situated 7 minutes away from the main street so it will give you a good tour of old town when figuring out old town. Overall a great experience for budget travellers
Great place to stay in Shela!
We've got 2 spacious rooms on the highest floor with ocean and island view, connected by a huge terasse with places to lounge.
Beds comfortable and equipped with a mosquito set. Ventilators working well, although the heat could not be beated.
The staff was extremely helpful, satisfying all our needs, always smiling.
The rooftop restaurant also has incredible views over the island and sea, sunrise and sunset with a breeze. Food - breakfast and dinner - was delicious.
The place is highly recommended!
Banana House is a wonderfully secluded peaceful guest house a very short walk from the foreshore and all amenities in Shela. Shela itself boasts miles of Sandy beaches, beautiful dunes with sailing fishing and other activities as well as a wide range of eateries. Banana House offers an excellent morning yoga session not to be missed. the food here is very good indeed and Monica’s team are flexible and responsive. the accommodation is clean and basic - classically East African. This is a great location for couples or singles
Beautiful boutique hotel with large spacious rooms done up in a gorgeous Swahili style and a massive common area, right in the heart of Lamu Old Town's narrow roads. Safari, Johnson and Abu are really great. Safari in particular went out of his way to help us make our stay amazing, such as finding us a dhow captain to organise a private dhow trip. I'd 100% recommend Andavelo House for your Lamu stay.
We had an amazing time at Diamond Beach ! The best place to stay after 2 crazy weeks of safaris and waking up at 6am to visit Kenya.
Perfect if you want to rest on the beach, take a swim, eat some good food, and enjoy life.
Bonus: Pizza & movie night was amazing. we were so lucky to have the actual film director coming to present his movie + pizzas were delicious :)
The STAFF are exceptional. Rooms were spacious. Locals called it “the palace”. Everything was marble, high ceilings with fans. Pool was indoors…
having breakfast (to order)each morning was great. The staff,
Safari along with Johnson and Abu are exceptional and were the best part of Lamu for me. Helpful, respectful, kind, patient and knowledgeable!
We had a wonderful stay at the apartment, situated in the heart of Shela, very close to the boat arrival area and other venues. The host was incredibly kind and provided us with information even before our arrival. The on-site staff was also very accommodating and always available to assist us.
Amazing and ecological gem in the middle of Lamu town in a traditional and beautifully restored and decorated house. Delicious and thoughtful breakfast and all the staff is amazing!
Trips to beaches, mangroves and other beautiful sights can easily be arranged from the hotel.
The welcome drink (fresh passion juice) and convenient check in was awesome. I also liked the breakfast, Hamid was accomodative and friendly, too. The place was clean and was reasonably priced. Tom also met us on time at the Shela jetty and carried our luggage, which was nice.
Mostly, I was totally relaxed and the longer O stayed, the more relaxed I became. It is very well maintained and beautifully renovated hotel in the middle of the old town of Luma. Great effort has been made to reduce its environmental footprint and it is very eco friendly.
Absolutely amazing place. Lots of nice pockets to sit and relax, the rooms and the whole hotel are beautiful, and Amani, who runs it, is lovely and incredibly helpful -- we were met at the airport even though we forgot to share our flight time! Could not recommend more.
My stay in Tree house was just wonderful. The hotel is very special, amazing vibe and incredible location. It was so peaceful and the staff are very helpful and nice. I also loved the food, very healthy, tasty and big dishes. I will definitely come back.
Typical house located in the heart of Lamu Town. The bedroom is spacious and super comfortable. Arnold and his staff are really great and kind. The breakfast was delicious. Arnold is a wealth of information on Lamu and he will arrange tours for you.
I had a very nice stay. It is an old, interesting house with so much character. Very comfortable and Kahindi was very helpful to me. Perfect location in the old part of Lamu.
We stayed at the King Suite with a massive balcony that has a beautiful view. It was probably the best highlight of staying in Shela. We would highly recommend the King Suite.
Location is great...to the left Shela beach...to the right you could walk to Old Town Lamu. Food was excellent and staff were really attentive! We loved the Chess board
