Lamu House is truly unique in the warmth, positivity and kindness of the staff. We were treated and looked after like family; the staff really could not have gone above and beyond to look after us. A special thanks to Joyce, Esther, Hulda, Benson, Cecil and David. The hotel itself is magnificent ((photos do not do it justice) and the food sublime. The location is perfect for exploring Lamu Old Town and Shela is easily accessible by boat (which Lamu House arranged.) It was so very sad to leave this inimitable gem of a hotel. We would highly recommend Lamu House to anyone travelling to the island and we shall definitely be returning!

First of all: there is no a/c. It was hot and stuffy at night, despite two big ceiling fans. During the day, with doors and shutters open, it was actually breezy and pleasant, as the hotel is right on the water. The other downside is the dim lighting in the rooms, which made it hard for me (older person with older eyesight) to find stuff in my suitcase. Again, not a problem during the day with shutters open. But if you are okay without a/c, this is a lovely hotel. My room had a private courtyard which led out to the small but charming swimming pool. Esther, the manager, was super helpful about arranging a guide for the Old Town, a water taxi for an expedition to a different part of the island, etc. There is a good restaurant, and breakfast is part of the deal (very slow service). I enjoyed the mix of travelers from many different parts of the world, including African tourists.

We are regulars to Lamu and to Lamu House. However, our latests visit to the hotel has left us with a sour taste. It seems the new hotel management are more focused on cost saving measures and cutting corners - than on costumer care. For example, the food has gone down hill but prices have gone up a lot; the wifi doesn’t work around the hotel and now you’re only allowed one hour of internet in the restaurant even if you’re a resident. This’s to encourage people to consume drinks and food. The service is not as good as it used to be - orders were incorrect or late; staff seemed demoralised and unhappy with the new set up. Overall, it was a disappointing experience at the legendary Lamu House.

We spent many afternoons and evenings at the Lamu House bar and restaurant. We celebrated both my partners and my birthday, being spoilt by Raman and his colleague Benson. The chef Michael and his team provided us with excellent food and Raman saw to it that nothing was too much trouble. The service and ease with which we were looked after was incredible. We loved our time spent, drinking sundowners, watching the fisherman return from trips and seeing life float by outside. Our time spent in Lamu was exceptional and this place was so relaxed and peaceful. Thank you Raman and your team. Amazing memories and built friendships.

Our stay here was fabulous. Loved the traditiona; SSwahili architecture and the deco. We had a lovely room with a view of the bay which I highly recommend. The pool is magic day or nbight. Esther asn her staff are hospitable and helpful. A delight. Hopew to return

The hotel looks delightful but is absolutely dreadful if you have any trouble with steps or mobility. The pool has NO STEPS in or out so even for fit people it was difficult to get out. My bed was a mattress on a concrete plinth in set in a sort of cubicle which they very kindly turned around so i could actually get in and out of bed. The mosquito net was full of holes. The food is mediocre and quite expensive - i would advise going out some restaurants up the road which are better and cheaper. The Wi-Fi is not working. Generally Not having a great time here and looking forward to leaving

We stayed at Lamu House Hotel for 2 nights in August 2023 with our 9 year old daughter. We all loved the hotel, the pool as well as the food in the restaurant. Staff were so friendly and helpful and our room in particular was very spacious. The whole place was spotless and would definitely recommend.

We spent 4 nights at the amazing Lamu house, the staff was friendly and very helpful, they have the moonrise restaurant that served amazing dishes. Special thanks to the waiters Cecil for the warmth, hospitality and smiles during our stay, David for his dawa and all his drink ideas, Abu for showing us the rich culture of Lamu and all the helpful staff that were with us on our adventure at Lamu. None of this would have been possible without Ashford tours led by Janice who facilitated our entire stay together with transport to and from the property.
