Thatch Caye, a Muy’Ono Resort
No doubt, Belize is home to some fantastic over-the-water stays.
But if you are looking for some of the best overwater bungalows in Belize with an eco-driven philosophy, chances are the Muy’Ono Thatch Caye Resort will top your list.
You could find more luxurious (and more expensive) island resorts in Belize, but few of them match the privacy and views of Thatch Caye’s ‘Premier Overwater Bungalows,’ as well as their excellent food, welcoming staff, and personalized service.
Thatch Caye welcomes everyone, but is especially popular with honeymooners, scuba divers, and yoga enthusiasts looking for an escape from it all without sacrificing modern comforts.
HOT TIP ▸ If you have the option, it’s a good idea to spring for the all-inclusive package, as it generally ends up being a better deal for most guests. The nightly rate on sites such as Hotels.com and Booking.com currently includes the all-inclusive package. However, it’s always a good idea to thoroughly read the hotel and room description as things do change from time to time.

Top Tips for Getting the Most Out of Overwater Bungalows in Belize
- Not all Belize overwater bungalows are created equal! There can even be significant differences between different bungalows in the same property.
- Some of Belize’s overwater bungalows are located on remote islands 1-2 hours from the mainland. We recommend bringing plenty of snacks and even a small first-aid kit, as stock on the island may be limited.
- On that note, if your resort offers a meal plan, it’s usually a good bet to take advantage of that. On Belize’s offshore cayes, restaurant options outside of your resort may be seasonal, limited, or non-existent.
- Before your arrival date, it’s a good idea to contact the resort directly to touch base regarding transport to the island (date, time, location, and cost).
- Belize overwater bungalows (even luxury villas) tend to have a very limited number of power outlets in each bungalow (sometimes only one). If you plan to bring more than just your phone, you’ll want to pack a small power strip to charge your devices.
- Don’t bet on WiFi at even the most luxurious overwater bungalows in Belize. WiFi on the cayes is generally dependent on cell coverage and often non-existent. Best to keep this in mind when planning your trip. If WiFi is a deal-breaker, contact the resort ahead of time regarding availability and reliability.
Belize Frequently Asked Questions
Does Belize have overwater bungalows?
YES!!! Belize is one of the few countries on the Caribbean that offers overwater bungalows. Bungalows range from very basic to quite luxurious.
When is the best time to visit Belize?
With the right attitude, any time of year can be a great time to visit Belize! If you’re after the driest, sunniest weather, December through May is your best bet. However, expect the highest prices and worst availability during this time, particularly in December and January. If you’re looking for the best prices and availability, think about visiting from June through October. But be prepared for rain and the possibility of severe weather, particularly in Southern Belize (Stann Creek and Toledo), which receives the most rainfall.
Is the water deep in Belize?
Depends on where you are! Most of Belize is protected by the Belize Barrier Reef. In the north, depths can be measured in mere feet within the area bounded by the mainland and the reef. As you head farther south, the water gets deeper, forming the Main and Victoria channels (reaching ~100 feet). On the eastern side of the Belize Barrier Reef, the shelf drops quickly to depths of around 9,000 feet. All of the resorts listed in this guide are located either in the shallows between the mainland and barrier reef, or directly on the barrier reef itself.
